Abstract

Heritage tourism in Portugal faces a few challenges that reflect the complexity of balancing the preservation of cultural and natural heritage with the growing demand for tourism, the preservation of local identities, and the commercialization of heritage, which has a profound impact on the lives of Portuguese people, especially in cities.
The over-commercialization of cultural heritage, driven by mass tourism, dilutes the authenticity of local traditions and practices, turning them into simplistic attractions. Local communities face challenges such as rising living costs, gentrification, loss of access to their spaces, and social tensions.
To mitigate negative impacts, it is essential to adopt sustainable tourism strategies that limit the number of visitors, protect cultural and natural resources, value archaeological and rural tourism, and ensures that economic benefits are shared equally among local communities. This way, it is possible to preserve cultural and natural heritage for future generations and maintain a balance between tourism and community life.
