The Tourist Potential of the Castro Heritage Site – The Castro Route of Northwest São Paulo
Keywords:

Portugal has consistently emphasized the importance of its heritage in its tourism plans, positioning cultural and landscape tourism as a strategic component of the national tourism offering. However, not all of this heritage is utilized for tourism, as several unique and significant heritage sites remain neglected. The hillfort heritage of northwestern Portugal is one such example, largely degraded and abandoned. This research aims to analyze its tourism potential. It was therefore essential to understand its historical significance in the region and the projects underway to enhance its value, both in Portugal and in Spain, specifically in Galicia. The research results confirmed that the hillfort heritage of northwestern Portugal does indeed possess significant tourism potential, despite its widespread neglect and degradation, and could be established as a major tourism product for the region. The creation of tourism products based on this heritage contributes to its safeguarding, dissemination and enhancement, and therefore, at the end, a tourism product proposal in the form of a cultural route called the Route of the Castros of Northwest Portugal is presented.
