Modern spa in Galicia and its heritage value from its origins to the present day

Traditional spas make up a unique heritage in the autonomous community of Galicia. The main objective of this research is to analyze how the evolution of these establishments has been, bearing in mind the imprint they have left in the Galician cultural landscape. For this we will refer, on the one hand, to the mineral water spas that stood out for their salutary virtues and, on the other, to the bathhouses where the first tourists went to take the wave baths, highlighting the vicissitudes of each stage and facing the study from a multidisciplinary perspective. The starting point is to carry out a review of the existing literature to determine the status of the issue. Once this is done, the qualitative methodological treatment to be followed contemplates carrying out field work, focused on non-participant observation and in-depth interview. Among the results of this work we can verify how the spas have been fundamental establishments for the tourist development of some Galician towns, how they have been transforming their architecture and how they have been integrated as cultural and identity elements, although the discussion focuses on determining the classification of their heritage assets. The great variety of types, together with the problems related to the management of these goods and that are especially manifested in a lack of dissemination, alert us to the importance of the fact that for their integral understanding and greater appreciation the management chain is completed.
